News and Commentary for September, 2006

Faye Dunaway dominates Steve McQueen on the chess board in the 1968 Oscar winning film, The Thomas Crowne Affair.  Now, a chess metaphor has been applied to another intelligent woman, Condi.

Chess Anyone?

Code words have always been popular. We give them to military operations, products (initially to protect industrial secrets, but now more for more marketing mystique -- just ask Bill Gates.), and the Secret Service gives them to Presidents. Now it's rumored that Condi's Middle East policy has been dubbed "Queen's Gambit Accepted." See our blog post by the same name. (link)

September 10, 2006:

The Price of Security

You might have thought that the Discovery Channel was where your children learned about dinosaurs and saw videos of mating animals that lead to awkward questions.

(How many of us are old enough to remember this "techno-disco" track? This might have been one best arguments for "intelligent design," or what was known at the time in a non-PC way as "creation science?"  Hey "baby," I am more than a "mammal!")

Tonight at 8pm EDST, "Ted Koppelosaurus," a television news media dinosaur, will interview Dr. Rice and Karen Hughes on the Discovery Channel special program The Price of Security that we hope doesn't turn into liberal "whinefest" about how we're going to lose the War on Terror if we support the Patriot Act and don't insist that the NSA stop listening to overseas telephone calls coming from known terrorists into the United States. Why were these "non-issues" in World War II? (Even amateur radio was prohibited during the war.)
During the Civil War, President Lincoln, suspended Habeas Corpus and is often attributed with the statement, "the Constitution is not a suicide pact." He was, in part, motivated by northern "Peace Democrats" (also known as "Copperheads," or snakes that strike without warning). It's true; history does repeat itself. Set your TIVO's and VCR's. Hopefully, in an upcoming blog post, we can report that, at last, Ted Koppel, of ABC Nightline fame has grown older and wiser when it comes to the War on Terror.

September 10, 2006:

Howard & Condi

In an extraordinary pairing, Secretary Rice is scheduled on Fox News Sunday later today along with DNC Chairman Howard Dean.  (Unfortunately, they're not on during the same segment. Now, that would be a show!) This will put the current extreme left leadership of the Democratic party "front and center."

On the eve of the 5th anniversary of 9-11, and with the mid-term elections rapidly approaching, Dr. Rice can clearly articulate the issues that are at stake and show why the radical liberal ideology of Dean, Pelosi, Reid, Boxer, and Hillary (the "stealth" liberal) would be a catastrophe for our nation. Was it Karl Rove that said, "our best strategy for the election is to let the Democrats be Democrats?" (Trivia questions: What is Karl's middle name? When is his birthday? answers) In this "teaser" excerpt from Dean's interview you hear a calm (medicated?) Howard repeating the Democratic talking points that Iraq is a "distraction" to the War on Terror and trying to sound "tough" on terrorism (rather unconvincingly) by making sure to slip into his answer that in his opinion we should "capture or kill" Usama Bin Laden. (emphasis ours)

Really Howard?  We never would have thought of that! Too bad it's a lot harder to find him now that he won't yak on satellite telephones anymore thanks to press leaks, nor will he transfer money around electronically anymore, even overseas, thanks to a press leak, nor could we listen in on any al Qaeda telephone calls coming into the US if the Democrats have their way and the court decision -- by a Carter appointee -- against "warrantless" wiretaps is upheld. We don't need "warrantless" wiretaps as much as we need "leakless" ones.  Of course, now that they know we're listening, there won't be much to hear!  And after more leaks about CIA prisons for high-risk terrorists and a definition of torture so broad that we can't even send a captured terrorist to bed without supper, is it any wonder that UBL is still running around loose? Of course, Democrats have been blaming Republicans for problems they've helped create for decades.

Sept. 11, 2006:

5th Anniversary of 9-11

No politics today. Today we are all Americans and New Yorkers. As Muslims, Jews and Christians; all children of the God of Abraham; we will pray today that our Lord will show us how to live together in Peace and strengthen us against the agents of death and hatred who would spread their poison among us.

As portrayed in the ABC mini-series, VP Cheney appeared to be a feeble and weak leader during the crisis.  Actress Penny Johnson Jerald (bio), better known from the series 24 as the manipulative, "diabolical," and conniving wife, with little regard for the law, of President David Palmer.  (Sound like any past First Ladies you know?)  She had the "Condi-look," but gave a performance that made Dr. Rice look perplexed, with an almost wide-eyed, "horror movie" scared expression that prompted the actor playing Richard Clark (Stephen Root, bio) to ask her (in an "Alexander Haig moment"), "Do you want me to take over?" Root's performance was excellent, as were those of many of the actors and actresses.  But we wonder how much of the dialogue was a "creative composite" or "time-compressed" dramatization. We used to call that "making stuff up" when we were kids.  Interestingly, Clark is currently employed as an ABC News consultant.  Could that have had any influence on the final editing?  After extensive whining from the Left, including threats against the FCC licenses of stations airing the program by Reid, Pelosi, et al. (The same tactics attempted against the Swift Boat vets.), some Lewinski-related scenes and dialog were cut from the final "version."  To their credit, ABC broadcast the series without commercial interruption, but by having these cut scenes they are setting themselves up for future DVD sales of the "un-cut" version.

Path to 9-11 Response

Ahmad Shah Massoud, "the Lion of Panjsher," was favorably portrayed by Mido Hamada in The Path to 9-11.  From our limited knowledge of the man, leader of the Northern Alliance, who was crucial in defeating the Taliban; he ought to be on a US stamp.  (Believe it, or not, he's already on a 2003 French stamp!) or have a monument in his honor somewhere.  He was murdered by Taliban suicide bombers 2 days before 9-11.  (More information: Wikipedia, blogosphere, embassy, InfoPlease, actor's bio)  Photo courtesy of ABC.

In what appears to have been a response to the 5th Anniversary of 9-11, ABC's Path to 9-11 mini-series (In case you missed it, you can view it, in its entirety, online.), the President's address to the nation, and the recent primaries; we've had a marked increase in supporters for Condi 2008 as indicated by online donations for bumper stickers. In spite of notices that we're currently "out of stock" some have ordered lapel pins and t-shirts.

We're encouraged to see this, but we weren't prepared for it and may have to re-order some items. Also, we're still recovering from the confusion left by our change in shipping agents this summer. Apparently, due to their inexperience with bulk mailing and other postal regulations, many orders were sent, but did not arrive, or arrived with "postage due." (If this happened to you and you had to pay additional postage, we sincerely apologize. It wasn't intentional.) Therefore, we have undertaken to resend all of the orders from this summer during the time that we "outsourced" our shipping. If you receive a second shipment, please make sure that it gets used! This should be completed by next week. If there are items that are no longer available, we'll refund any payments for these items.

Duane "Dog" Chapman

Duane "Dog" Chapman (A&E, "official" website) will have his extradition request by Mexico decided by Secretary Rice according to Philadelphia's NBC affiliate.

September 15, 2006:

Condi & "The Dog"

The high profile extradition case of reality TV star "Dog the Bounty Hunter" who captured Andrew Luster, convicted serial date rapist while a fugitive in Mexico, will be decided by Secretary Rice according to the NBC Channel 10 affiliate in Philadelphia. (NBC 10 report). Luster, who was (is?) the Max Factor heir, used his mobility and money to evade capture in the US and live the "good life" of a fugitive in Mexico. His whereabouts were not exactly a closely guarded secret as "Dog" demonstrated -- much to the embarrassment of US and Mexican officials whose job it was to capture this guy. With a little a persistence and patience, he was able to accomplish what FBI agents at the US consulates in Mexico and the Mexican police could not. He didn't need Predator drones, satellite images, GPS tracking, or agency expense accounts. Needless to say this "chapped" more than few bureaucratic behinds who felt that they were robbed of their television camera "perp walk," which they would have eventually gotten around to after a few more cervezas with their official Mexican liaisons -- who are rumored to have wanted a little more time to "squeeze" some of the millions out of Luster's trust fund before he was turned over. (What!? Corrupt law enforcement officials in Mexico? Impossible!) The "culturally-sensitive" gringo federales didn't want to offend their host country's sense of honor (The same sense of "honor" that let's them harbor murderers, cop killers, rapists, child molesters, drug traffickers, etc. for years, but always at a price.) and didn't complain about their "mañana" attitude.  After all, their "priorities" in Mexico were to stop major drug traffickers, human smugglers, and tap into that federal budgetary "mother lode" of homeland security by relating their activities in "paradise" to terrorism. "Date-raped" women, who were taken advantage of by some rich heir in California were barely on their radar screen.

060911 Condi and Canadian FM Peter McKay 5th aniverssary of 9-11 in Nova Scotia
Here, Dr. Rice walks alongside Canadian Foreign Minister Peter McKay as part of the ceremonies for the 5th anniversary of 9-11 in Nova Scotia. The State Dept. is denying any relationship, other than "professional" between the two.  In other news, Condi is no stranger to bounty hunting having put prices on the heads of numerous terrorists through the State Department's Rewards for Justice (RFJ) program. (See our last blog post about this.  Our July archives mention it, too.) Now, she'll have to decide the fate of reality TV bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman after Mexico requested his extradition in connection with his capture of Max Factor heir Andrew Luster, convicted serial rapist, in Mexico.  Oye, Señor Presidente Fox, ¿estás bromeando?

Needless to say, Duane "Dog" Chapman's capture of Mr. Luster "threw a monkey wrench" into their plans. Granted, he accomplished the capture with a "flair for the dramatic," after all, he is a reality TV personality -- that is his job.  With Dr. Rice's public positions on human trafficking and the exploitation of women, it is doubtful that "Dog" will have to do little more than shed a "crocodile tear," do a public "Oh Gee, I am sooooo very sorry." and pay the equivalent of a "parking ticket" -- allowing Mexican officials to "save face."

What's shameful is that US Marshals would take part in what, at this point, appears to be a travesty of justice. (We know, they were "just following orders." Where have we heard this before?)  We "catch and release" illegal immigrants every day, allow those with arrest warrants to arrange their surrender after negotiation with their attorneys, but "Dog" got the "Janet Reno treatment."  Who was responsible for this decision?  We hope that Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez is looking into this and will either be forthcoming with some new information, an explanation as to why this was necessary, or tell us how he's going to deal with those responsible.

September 18, 2006:

What's Colin Powell up to?

Many of us never could have imagined the day that Republican senators would undermine a Republican administration -- for that matter ANY administration, regardless of party, in the War on Terror.  But John McCain, Lindsey Graham and several other senators that think being a "Republican maverick" is a winning strategy for their White House ambitions are doing just that. (WaPo) But they are sadly mistaken. They are confusing the "face time" that the mainstream media has gleefully given them because of their public split with the Bush administration with "success" in their Oval Office quest.  Their addiction to media exposure is allowing them to be "played" by the Left. You can read a recent Capitol Hill Blue article to see how this is being framed and spun by the Democrats.

Less obvious are Powell's motives. What is he thinking? He writes a letter that he knew John McCain would go public with immediately. It's almost as confusing as to why someone who suffered for years as a POW would now be the promoting an expansion of protections provided by the same Geneva Convention that failed him (and thousands of other POW's) so miserably in the past and will certainly be ignored by everyone but us in the future.

Dr. Rice wrote a letter that clearly contradicted Powell's. Her letter and Powell's were published in the same Associated Press article that appeared in the LA Daily News. As 2008 approaches, it will become readily apparent that Secretary Rice's position of an aggressive stance in the War on Terror is more in tune with that of American voters than that of the Democrats and Republican "mavericks."

Colin Powell trivia: In 1999, the retired general wrote a letter concerning another issue.  An issue about which Dr. Rice has recently expressed her position, and not surprisingly, the two do not agree.  What is the issue?  Answer

USA UN delegation, including Secretary Condoleezza Rice and Ambassador Bolton September 21, 2006.
Stern faces on the US delegation at the UN during the week that Presidents Chavez and and Alminejad spoke to the General Assembly. But every "cloud" has a silver lining -- even if it isn't widely reported in the media. There were more than a few empty chairs in addition to those at the US delegation for the address of Venezuela's Presidente, whose bombast was loudly applauded by the representatives of other totalitarian regimes and those bought off with "sweetheart" oil deals. (His popularity at home will suffer once his constituency of poor Venezuelans realize that he's been giving away their country's oil in return for his attempts at international self aggrandizement. Smoother, smarter, and much more ominous, was Chavez' compadre from Iran who by the end of his week in New York appeared to have mellowed -- a little.

Almadinejad at UN, September 2006September 21, 2006:

Chavez & Almadinejad.  Thank you!

This may be a "contrarian" view, but by having Señor Chavez and "President Armageddon" come to the "Big Apple," things are looking up for the 2006, and ultimately, the 2008 election.

Many were lamenting that delegates in the General Assembly applauded these two "stand up comics."  Of course they did.  These two are using their nation's petroleum to "buy" the audience -- in the same way Chavez was passing around heating oil in Harlem -- all for the price of listening to his long-winded drivel and being part of his "photo-op."  The same way that Saddam bought off France, Germany and Russia -- only the price, presumably, was higher.  Unwittingly, these buffoons have helped us keep the Senate and the House in Republican hands more than they could ever imagine.

(Remember your college -- or military -- days?  Most of us have had the experience of having had to invite somebody to a party because nobody else had "beer money."  Same thing with Chavez and Almadinejad, only it's not beer, it's oil!)

These petrodollar wealthy and increasingly well-armed "clowns" are priceless "visual aids" for the case that the administration and Dr. Rice have been making about the importance of the War on Terror and why "staying the course" is a matter of survival for our nation. These guys were covered by every major (and minor) news, television, radio and Internet outlet on the planet. And there wasn't the obligatory "Democratic response" to confuse things afterwards, as happens whenever the President gives an address. They personify the lunacy of the "moonbat" Left. So much so that even Charlie Rangel and Nancy Pelosi realized (probably without even a focus group to guide them) that they needed to separate themselves from Chavez, and "moonbats" like Danny Glover, in a hurry. (We hope to have the videos posted soon.)

The only thing that could get those two to jump to the defense of President Bush is the possibility that the 2006 midterm election, that they view as their best chance in many years to pick up the reins of power, could be blown because of the political clarity that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez bring to the political debate in the United States.  Many Americans may have disagreements about the prosecution of the War on Terror, and the War in Iraq (Which, by the way, is part of the War on Terror contrary to Democratic talking points.), but a majority of Americans are very clear about which party would be the "toughest" on terrorists after the Democrats have championed (and have even celebrated when successful) efforts to repeal, or "water down," the Patriot Act, stop wiretaps from suspected terrorists outside the country to telephones in the United States, stop interrogation of terrorists using anything but the most languid measures, etc.  If security is the issue on the minds of voters in November, the Democrats lose, and they know it.

Arlington National Cemetery

September 24, 2006:

True, but stupid

This week one of the Democrats talking points was the "shocking" fact that Iraq combat casualties exceeded the number of dead on 9-11 (AP-ABC) -- as if this were "proof" of one of their other talking points that "America is headed in the wrong direction." (Just what does that mean? Is NASA supposed to figure out how to reverse the earth's rotation so that we can get started in the "right" direction?)

This is a common propaganda method.  Emphatically state a fact that is verifiable and without question, then segue into your "talking point" -- this way the fact lends credence to the talking point.  In this case the "fact" was the Associated Press report.

("Dark Milestone" article in Huffington Post)

By applying this logic, we shouldn't have responded to Pearl Harbor, after all we lost hundreds of thousands more in the war that followed, right? And the argument that "we've created more terrorists in Iraq" is a specious one as well. Once your enemies see that you're "on the war path" (Is that politically incorrect today?) and are going to try to kill them, they generally try and raise an army to try and defend themselves -- did the US entering WWII "create" more Nazi soldiers when Hitler drafted them?  Of course not!  Logic 101: Just because something happens before something else, does not mean that there is a causal relationship between the two.  But understanding the reality of the world around them has never been important to liberals.  They just "program"  themselves with enough leftist media propaganda, in the fine tradition of Dan "These documents are not forgeries." Rather, until they believe the world is the way that they preconceive it.  We have to be careful not to fall for their rhetorical "traps."

September 27, 2006:

Clintons "tag team" Condi

Two Clintons vs. one Condi, it hardly sounds fair -- to the Clintons!

It began on Fox News Sunday when Bill Clinton started wagging his finger during his interview with Chris Wallace.  And we all know the lies and ridiculous excuses that prompted such an outburst last time.

Excuse us, Mr. President, who didn't you have sex with? And just what is the meaning of "is?"

Could this encore performance be any different?  Doubtful.

Also, just like the "stained blue dress," that demonstrated Clinton's lack of veracity after his last "finger wagging" episode, the clearly documented truth was all the "political DNA" that Dr. Rice needed to demonstrate his "errors."  She "diplomatically" (After all, she is the Secretary of State!) described Bill's account of events to Chris Wallace as "flatly false."  (See the NY Post cover and article from Sept. 26, 2006.)

With this interview, Wallace "made his journalistic 'bones'" according to liberal commentator Juan Williams.  But just for the entertainment value we would have loved to have seen the former President pat Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, or the feisty Julie Banderas (bio) on the knee and attempt to do the same "righteous indignation" act with any one of them!  (Could you imagine Julie smacking Clinton?  What would the Secret Service have done?)  Wallace should be commended for maintaining his composure, but part of us would like to have seen a more "combative" interviewer.

In the past -- a past that is rapidly receding -- we've had some Republicans comment that Condi was not "ready" for a national campaign.  That she had not been "tempered" by the red-hot heat of a hotly contested campaign.  As the "point man" for the administration, taking on both Clintons, this is one issue that can now be laid to rest.  Her calm, determined response to the theatrics of the former President demonstrates that she has the political savvy to win in 2008.

There is one fact not in dispute.  The "hand-off" from the Clinton administration to its Republican successor resulted in the loss of precious, precious time as the government "shifted gears" from the "law-enforcement" approach of the Clinton years, when intelligence and law enforcement agencies could not speak to one another, to the "stop swatting flies" War on Terror approach that was just getting off the ground in the new Bush administration when 9-11 happened.  (See this 2002 CNN report, "Timeline of Counter-Terrorism Planning")

Time is even more critical now, and will be even more so in 2008.  The time lost in "educating" a new administration would be enormous and give tactical advantages to our enemies who would, no doubt, use the confusion of transition against us.  This is why Secretary Rice is the clear choice in 2008 to become "President Rice."  Her experience will diminish the "learning curve" for the future Rice administration.  After the midterm elections, when the focus shifts to 2008, this conclusion will become obvious to millions of Americans, and most importantly to Dr. Rice, herself.

Interest in Condi is global as shown by this visitor map showing the last 100 visitors to the website today, September 27, 2006.

Congressman John Sweeney is in Howard Dean's and Hillary's crosshairs as they try to replace him with a Clinton loyalist.

September 29, 2006:

Democratic Money Machine trying to gain control of the House

Howard Dean and Hillary Clinton combined forces last night at Washington's Mayflower Hotel in an effort to take back the House of Representatives. The event last night was in support of Kirsten Rutnik Gillibrand, a New York lawyer and Clinton loyalist trying to unseat Representative John Sweeney, (NY-20),  who has never been shy about expressing his support for Dr. Condoleezza Rice.  Visit his website and do what you can to help.  Help stop Hillary's money machine.  At least visit to watch his online ads -- you must see the "Kathy Brown" ad.  The mother of a fallen soldier, who doesn't support the war, but got the help she was looking for through John Sweeney.  He went to Iraq and came back to advocate for better armor for our troops.  (donate, volunteer, ads)

Hillary Clinton's ability to raise money is well-known and is fueling Democratic efforts to oust enough Republicans to paralyze the administration until 2008 with "Speaker" Nancy Pelosi starting endless investigations.
